...that the Kennedy bubble has burst, has it been just a bubble? Was it a highly organized spectacular, glistening and eye-catching enough to serve as a short cut to high office but lacking in maturity and substance? The people of the U.S. would do well to place the fortunes of our country in the hands of those who have won their spurs each step...

What sounds like sentimentalized, kindergarten Freud is molded by Director Richard C. Sarafian and a talented cast into an uninsistent and evocative parable of childhood's end. Sarafian-a former TV director-has an eye for the feeling and texture of inanimate as well as living things. When the colonel searches a birdwatcher's guide for an entry, the book assumes an identity of its own; notes are scribbled in the margin, the pages are dirty and soiled, odd cards and scraps of paper are stuck between pages to mark essential passages. TECHNICALLY Easy Rider is a clumsy first picture. Hopper breaks directorial line in almost every sequence to no valuable effect. Kovacs' landscapes and wide-angle shots of the two motorcycles crossing the Southwest are quite marvelous; but the LSD sequence is predictable--lots of fish-eye shots, weeping, and intimation of death--and boring, and doesn't do justice to the drug (compare Conrad Rooks' sublime hallucinations in Chappaqua or in any film by Jordan Belson). Kuznetsov felt certain that Andjapazidze was what Russians call a mamka (nanny), a secret-police agent who was supposed to keep an eye on him. During the first four days, Kuznetsov behaved like a model Communist. On the fifth evening, during a tourist's stroll through Soho's lurid strip joints, Kuznetsov said that he wanted to find a prostitute. Andjapazidze discreetly left his companion...

Many other companies, including Consolidated Foods, Scripto and Burlington Industries, are turning a hard eye on expansion plans, especially for 1970. "We'll spend around $275 million this year, as we had figured to do," says Goodyear Chairman Russell DeYoung. "But next year we'll be looking at all our proposed projects with more caution. Possibly outlay will be down." Adds a Firestone official: "Some cutbacks are likely next year." Demand for business loans has begun to taper. The Federal Reserve Board last week announced that loans at major banks declined in July for two weeks, dropping...
