Junior Andrew Flanagan (165), who finished fourth at Midlands last year, had been slated to compete for the first time this season after an eye injury but was pulled from the competition in a last-minute decision. ...Others, though, think that with Bhutto out of the race, elections have become a pointless exercise. Riaz Khan, acting secretary general of the U.K. branch of Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party, had known her for over 30 years. "There is not a single eye that is not weeping," he says. "Even her political opponents in this country are crying. Bhutto was a symbol of unity. She was the only leader who could unite all Pakistan's four provinces. ...peculiarity of my almost 20 years experience as the only Russian citizen among the select corps of TIME correspondents is that I often enough fail to see Russian matters eye-to-eye with my friends and colleagues at the magazine. Not that I always prove right. Still, I believe I'm right about this: Putin's formal emergence as the only viable national leader, and his tacit acceptance of the role, mark for Russia a point of no return in its slide into a new authoritarianism, the shape and nature of which cannot yet be fully defined. I'm sure...
