...Islamic states. An Elysée spokesman later said that no spare parts for French weapons in the Iraqi arsenal would be forthcoming while the fighting continued. But he said that France would honor a $1.6 billion arms agreement with Iraq involving the sale of 60 Mirage F-l jet fighters, as well as tanks, antitank weapons, radar, guided missiles and patrol boats-all part of an Iraqi attempt to diversify its weapons inventory away from total dependence on the Soviet Union...

...French response was more muted. Iraq is now the largest supplier of French oil after Saudi Arabia. French sales to Baghdad surpass $400 million a year, including a recent contract for 36 Mirage F-l jets. This bizarre "antisymmetrical" configuration, Jones contends, is superior to the familiar swing-wing design of, say, the Air Force F-l I I or the Navy F14, or the fixed-wing design of the British-French Concorde. Although drag is decreased when the wings of these aircraft are angled back, he says, another aerodynamic factor comes increasingly into play. At supersonic speeds, the swept back wings create noticeable pressure on each other; Jones likens the interference effect to that created when two motorboats speed alongside each other and waves from the bow of one boat slam into the hull...

...orders this year. The Defense Department also continues to reduce purchases as the Viet Nam War winds down. Moreover, technical problems until recently held up development of a more powerful engine for Boeing's 747, and production of an engine with more thrust for General Dynamics' F-l 11 fighter-bomber is behind schedule...
