...Morrisania Church in The Bronx stands as one of New York's finest examples of 19th century Gothic architecture. Its façade bears a plaque noting that Philanthropist Gouverneur Morris II built the church in memory of his mother and that Lewis Morris, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and the first Gouverneur Morris, who drafted the Constitution, are buried there. Rotten Underneath. As recently as 1959 a newspaper exposé showed that Georgia's only mental hospital, saddled with the stigmatic name of State Hospital for the Insane at Milledgeville, was a monstrous snake pit. Behind the façade of an administration building that looks like the White House, it was crowded to its rotten, rat-infested rafters with 12,000 patients. At least 3,000 were senile oldsters who did not belong there-any more than the epileptics, dope addicts or alcoholics who jammed the hospital. Comparatively few patients ever got better, and those who did succeeded...

Bare Skeleton. The building has the blunt honesty which decrees that, inside and out. the skeleton must be left bare. The surface of the reinforced concrete is intentionally left unfinished for texture, though it is not as rough and pitted as the façades of the buildings in the Indian provincial capital that Le Corbusier built at Chandigarh. Interior pipes are not only exposed but accented in green paint, like streaks of emerald against the white walls. Even the heating machinery stands exposed throughout the building, often recalling the boiler room of a ship...
