...eastern edge of Los Angeles -- not exactly where you would expect to see half a dozen sheriff's deputies in bulletproof vests, pistols at the ready. The gray-haired Chinese man who answered the door last Tuesday soon found himself handcuffed next to an associate, facedown on the floor, while the police searched the sparsely furnished home...
Like "Citizen Kane," "Sunset Boulevard" begins with its ending, the unexplained death of the hero. In a trick of cinematography, the glassy face of a B-movie screenwriter wavers across the screen, his corpse floating facedown in the white marble swimming pool of a forgotten star. As the sun rises over Hollywood, he begins to narrate the great story he never produced: his own demise...
Director Trevor Nunn and designer John Napier, the Cats team, have fashioned one coup de theatre after another, reprising Wilder's opening with the newly deceased hero (Alan Campbell as Joe Gillis) facedown in a swimming pool, and working up to a levitating mansion. But there were few such areas, so many of the trapped fighters raced the fire up the mountain, hoping to get over and find shelter behind a ridge above them. It was an excruciating...
...those familiar lyrics, Frank Sinatra began crooning an encore of My Way to a sold-out crowd in Richmond, Virginia, a week ago. Midway through his signature tune, dripping with sweat, the 78-year-old singer called for a chair, then suddenly collapsed. The audience gasped as he landed facedown with a thud. "I thought he had died," Sinatra's bass player told the Richmond Times-Dispatch. "I always figured he'd go onstage." Revived a few moments later, Sinatra was rushed off in a wheelchair and spent a few hours in a local hospital before flying to his home...
