That determined declaration by one of the nation's usually faceless financiers, Bank of America Chairman Louis B. Lundborg, may not rank historically with Martin Luther's challenge at the Diet of Worms: "Here I stand-I cannot do otherwise, God help me." It does indicate, however, that society is growing grimmer as it confronts youthful radicals and rioting students. The bank's $275,000 Isla Vista branch was burned to the ground last month during a rampage that began on the Santa Barbara campus of the University of California. Bank officials fear that they may smell...

...play ends, we find that the magnetic bond of combat which has continually drawn Schlink and Garga together is a product of the loneliness which each human being feels in the midst of a faceless jungle like Chicago. They must fight because they cannot communicate as people on any other terms. Brecht is showing us that we have developed a social system which-like Chicagoseparates, rather than unites, every man. "Human skin grows thicker and thicker." Schlink says, because of this system. This skin keeps people from knowing each other. The only force that pierces this, outer layer...

Middle America's villains are less easily singled out. Yippie Abbie Hoffman or S.D.S. leaders like Mark Rudd are hardly important enough by themselves to constitute major devils. With such faceless groups as the Weathermen, they merely serve as symbols of all the radicals who pronounce the country evil and ripe for destruction. Disliked, too, are the vaguely identified "liberals" and "intellectuals" who are seen as sympathizing with the radicals. Perhaps the most authentic individual villains to Middle America are the Black Panther leaders, Eldridge Cleaver and Bobby Seale...

...photography-not very good, but very successful. His coverage of our two Asian wars. Korea and Vietnam, have made him the best-known photographer in America. His photos have always confirmed things that we already knew, or thought we knew. His war photos: our gallant boys, bravely fighting the faceless hordes: why, sure, war is hell, and our troops get exhausted, and dirty, and ... boy! it's rough; but still they fight valiantly onward. Above all, Duncan's photos are predictable. We need only visualize our shallowest thoughts about any news event that Duncan covers to know what his photos...
