...competitive nature of college sports, nor is legislation really the answer. The solution will come when college football recaptures the game from the public relations men and gives it back to the players. Under the rule of P.R. men, college athletics are dying and are becoming just another facet of minor league professionalism...

...facet of insurance has escaped him. When Denenberg became upset over the difficulty of replacing a taillight on his state-owned Buick Le Sabre, he made the extravagant charge that General Motors designers made cars hard to repair in order to drive up repair costs for the benefit of dealers and parts manufacturers. With that, G.M. sent two executives to Harrisburg to inspect Denenberg's car. (They claimed it had suffered a "rear impact" that complicated repair of the taillight.) Denenberg has called the present system for paying auto-accident claims "a legalized racket," noting that the Pennsylvania state...

...there are even more obvious sources for this facet of Resnais's direction. A film such as Marienbad calls to mind the subjective chronology of twentieth century experimental fiction. As in the novels of Robbe-Grillet, there is no progress; the past exists only as a conjecture, and the present only as a dream. The same event, with minor variations, is constantly recurring, ending in a number of ambiguously false denouements...

If this is so, it adds a facet to one's view of Piranesi's most famous suite, the Carceri d'Invenzione or "Imaginary Prisons," which he engraved in 1745. They are among the most potent dream images ever evoked. To call them precursors of Surrealism is to diminish their oneiric power, for their directness as statements about hallucination has not been...

Violence clung to the IWW; its members wore the scars inflicted by the self-righteous brutality of vigilantes. Repression and cruelty were an unavoidable part of the IWW's burden, a load that Joe Hill helped to bear. Widerberg avoids this facet of his story until the film's historical pretense forces the issue. Obliged to include such a mob action scene in the San Diego sequence, he skims over the ugliness and jolts the camera so that most of the clubbing doesn't show. Either from disinterest or squeamishness he is unwilling to deal with Joe's life...
