...mandate system would also be unlikely to reduce costs in the healthcare bureaucracy. In fact, the mandate has been shown to sharply increase the number of payers in the system, which artificially drives up demand and prices, as seen by the rising individual costs of Massachusetts healthcare under the state’s current universal plan. Since that reform passed, health insurers have raised premiums between 7-12 percent, greater than the national average of 5-7 percent increases. This makes Massachusetts the state with the highest average family healthcare plans, $13,788 per year, despite the carefully crafted reform...

...flavor. "Our core strength for 50 years is delivery convenience," he told me. And it's not as if a subpar product was doing that much damage to its business; the chain is still firmly entrenched as the No. 2 pizza source in the world (behind Pizza Hut). The fact is that the Domino's reboot isn't that great. I just had one. It's slightly softer and greasier now, in an enjoyable way. Whatever. The point is not the taste itself but the fact that Domino's actually cares what its pizzas taste like. (See TIME's look...

...mozzarella from Wisconsin. Put those four things together, and you have the makings of a pizza that will please anyone. Domino's still doesn't get that - their new pie is a Franken-pizza of different cheeses, garlic-, salt- and butter-drenched crust and pepper-spiked sauce. But the fact that they bothered to make it at all shows that, in pizza as in politics, Americans have a persistent urge for progress, even of the crudest kind...

...Although the conference reiterated ambitious targets for rapidly expanding the Afghan National Army and the police force, the fact that no timetable was set for the phased transfer of security control from NATO to these indigenous forces underscores a sense of caution over how quickly Afghan forces will be able to take over. Last November, Brown had suggested that five provinces would be under Afghan control by the end of 2010, and President Obama set a goal of beginning to draw down U.S. troops in July 2011. Thursday's communiqué avoids most such specifics. Britain's Secretary of State...
