PNOMH PENH, Cambodia: One day after Pol Pot was reported captured by a Khmer Rouge faction, a shamefaced First Prime Minister Prince Norodom Ranariddh conceded that the notorious Khmer Rouge leader remains at large. That places the temporary advantage in Cambodia's explosive political tug-of-war in the hands of the formerly communist Cambodian People's Party, led by Second Prime Minister Hun Sen, who has long insisted that Pol Pot is dead. As TIME's Dean Fischer reports: "These two rival factions are trying to maneuver against each other, and one may be manipulating the facts...
...that the Patriots hadn't worked in the Gulf War after all; it was only the Pentagon propaganda about them that worked. As we now know, most of the Patriots, like most of the Scuds they were aimed at, fluttered harmlessly to earth. Hence the suggestion, from the disgruntled faction, that instead of upgrading the Patriots, the military should upgrade its propaganda machine until it's capable of overpowering the most unflattering fact. Then in January of last year, Simpson died at 52 of a drug overdose. The industry asked, Whither--or wither--Jerry...

...powers might have speeded up the case, but now it may be too late. Meanwhile, the Rocky Mountain News reported excerpts from the ransom note, which began, "Listen carefully, the two gentlemen who have your daughter don't like you," going on to claim authorship by a "small foreign faction." Yet why has Patsy Ramsey not been ruled out as the writer of the note that threatened to behead JonBenet (a fifth handwriting sample was recently requested of her)? And if outsiders killed the girl, why were there no footprints in the fresh snow around the Ramsey home the morning...
