MIDDLE EAST Israel Seizes Territory after Fresh Attacks In two separate attacks in Jerusalem, Palestinian suicide bombers killed 26 Israelis and injured 124 others. The radical group Hamas claimed responsibility for the first; the Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, linked to Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's Fatah faction, claimed the second. The Palestinian Authority denounced the attacks and, after the second, Arafat issued an appeal for suicide bombing to stop. The Israeli government announced that it would seize parts of Palestinian Authority territory and hold them as long as attacks continue. Dozens of Israeli tanks and armored vehicles backed by helicopter gunships...
...entire spectrum of Catholic laity has responded. Voice of the Faithful, which wants to turn the church into a representative democracy, is only the most radical. Just a few miles away, a more moderate Boston faction annoyed Bernard Cardinal Law recently by suggesting the creation of an independent diocesan advisory council that would compete with a group he appointed. In Belleville, Ill., an existing organization called the Fellowship of Southern Illinois Laity suddenly tripled its membership and actually scheduled a lay synod this past weekend. ...Taliban, Dostum has reasserted control over his home turf, the ethnically Uzbek and Turkmen provinces of Jowzjan and Faryab. But the onetime master of the north now finds his position challenged by the growing power of his erstwhile ally in the Northern Alliance, the mainly Tajik Jamiat-i-Islami faction. Jamiat's ascension has prompted an unlikely alignment between Dostum and Hamid Karzai, the patrician Pashtun tribal leader who heads Kabul's interim government. In December Karzai appointed Dostum deputy to Defense Minister Mohammed Fahim, Jamiat's military strongman, and in March he named Dostum his "special representative...
...everyone is buying the warlord's new clothes. Dostum rose to power as a ruthless brawler, the Mike Tyson of Afghan politics. For a decade he moved in and out of alliances with almost every major faction on the Afghan battlefield - the Taliban included. His zest for brute strategy can be traced to his love for bozkashi, the traditional sport of the northern plains. It's not a game for the faint of heart. One team of horsemen battles to haul a dead goat to one end of a field; opponents struggle to wrest it back and drag...
...almost four years later, what many hoped would be a march toward reform has slowed to a shuffle. While the TNI's 38-member faction is scheduled to withdraw from the national parliament by 2004, its political influence is growing again, partly due to the inability of President Megawati Sukarnoputri's government to fix Indonesia's many problems. Its vast business empire?the military owns or has interests in some 250 businesses, including Jakarta department stores, Bali resorts and massive land holdings nationwide, worth an estimated $3 billion?remains intact. And most importantly, say critics, the military has paid little...
