There is some evidence, in fact, that far from counteracting the debilitating effects of ghetto environments, present ghetto classrooms may add to them. A recent study by Robert Rosenthal, a Harvard psychologist, and Lenore Jacobsen, a San Francisco school principal, has indicated that teacher expectations for pupils may be a key variable in determining achievement.
