...unsigned news piece. This "Western puppet" was until recently receiving active support from the People's Repulic of China. It may well be true, as recent Crimson editorials have stated, that the FNLA is now totally an instrument of the Western powers. But in cases concerning factual interpretations, it seems to me that The Crimson, as any reputable publication, has a responsibility to either present various interpretation of the facts, or to stick to a neutral statement of factual developments...
International Sage. Even then Toynbee had his critics, who accused him of romanticism, vagueness and even factual error. But he had become an international sage, like Einstein, Schweitzer or Bertrand Russell, who was asked for his opinion on all manner of subjects. A mild and white-haired figure, married to his longtime research assistant, Veronica Boulter (his 33-year first marriage ended in divorce in 1946), Toynbee frequently visited U.S. universities and once commented that the things he liked best about the U.S. were Bing Crosby and peanut butter. Not all his views were so benign. When...
...exactly bombshells. He portrays the Cabinet as an ill-informed, impotent group of all-too-human Ministers concerned mostly about maintaining their own power and prestige, but these observations were neither unprecedented nor earth-shaking. It seems that what forced Wilson to take action was Crossman's version of factual events--a version that contradicted Wilson's own--and the influence this might have on the left wing of the Labour party, restive and ready to bolt at any sign of weakness on Wilson's part...
LUMET WAS SO ENGROSSED in covering a real news story that he made in a hip documentary about the event as though its factual basis were its most exciting aspect. He's got the Super-Journalist conceits that produce disorganized, melodramatic, drawn-out cinema. He doggedly records every harangue, phone call and twist of the action, including the dead spaces in between. Like a faithful reporter he never leaves the scene of the crime; since most of the film is shot in the bank's cramped interior, the visual monotony is relieved only by occasional shots of the street...
There is, still, a dogmatism here: Boll's assumption that such persistent reporting will in a minute and factual way produce the truth. The gross destruction of the World War is enough, perhaps, to confirm as corollary the Au.'s more subtle conclusions that this war machine also injured, with the grindings of its internal gears, a sensitive and beautiful woman. Or maybe also his suggestion, that, because this woman was endowed sensually and spiritually with qualities that transcended the simple realism of, say, another citizen or soldier, she was thus somehow justified in her utter ignorance till early...
