...Advice. Martin does catch Shipler in some factual errors. (One of Shipier's mistakes, the statement that 2,200 U.S. employees of private defense contractors have left Viet Nam since last July, actually weakens the ambassador's argument; Martin says that only 740 have departed.) But the inaccuracies Martin finds do not undercut Shipler's major points. These Martin attacks with invective and some assertions of his own. The "course of the war" is not set by U.S. aid; rather it is set by "the continuous and continuing Communist buildup." In fact, materiel from both Hanoi...
Arms from George III. Richard Tregaskis' "biography" is therefore a blend of the fanciful and the factual. But it makes a fascinating tale that hurtles home like one of its hero's long spears. The latter are those that "inform our feelings" and educate us about society in the only "authentic" possible way. Stott could have used his introductory chapters more fruitfully by examining the social pressures and political concerns and attachments that influenced the work he goes on to chronicle. As it is, we hardly know at times where Stott's appraisals end and the thirties' self-appraisals begin...
