...suggestions: first, most factual errors do seem to occur in the front-page daily stories. The features are uniformly better edited and less problematic. Surely, it cannot be that difficult to ensure that at least one editor from every beat is on duty on any given night. Then the daily stories, too, could be edited by someone who knows something about the subject matter. It would also ensure a modicum of consistency in editorial policy. Secondly, confirming quotations should be made a blanket policy in all cases. If extending this courtesy in 50 percent more cases would cut down...

Option three is to get post-modern, calling into question the basis of language itself. This is especially useful when asked simple factual question, like "what happened in 1776?" This can be met with a response like, "well, when we say 1776, do we see a 'number' representing the 'past,' or instead a sort of cultural signifier, a construction, a totality, if you will, that distorts as much as it reveals. Roberts v. Texaco by Bari-Ellen Roberts and Jack E. White and your excerpt of it [BUSINESS, March 16] contain numerous factual inaccuracies that present a distorted picture of the events surrounding the racial-discrimination class action of former Texaco senior financial analyst Roberts and other black employees. We feel it is not productive to launch a debate over the facts surrounding these incidents from the past. However, there ought to be a discussion of the questionable conduct of the plaintiffs' attorneys, who knew there was significant doubt as to whether there were racial epithets on the tapes...
