...woman, stealing from her a couple of dollars' worth of groceries. In Gaffney's district, about 97% of the offenders are black, and 95% of the victims are white women-usually Jews who have stubbornly stayed on in once comfortable apartments while the neighborhood deteriorated around them. "Fagin wouldn't last up here for half an hour," said Gaffney. "He'd be calling...
Granted that premise, this production is riveting. As a monocled Mack the Knife, Raul Julia moves like a Fred Astaire of gangsterdom, sometimes prowling for his favorite whore, Jenny (Ellen Greene). C.K. Alexander's Mr. Peachum-the Fagin of London's turn-of-the-century beggars-might have been drawn by George Grosz. The Kurt Weill score, too renowned for praise (Mack the Knife, Pirate Jenny), is superbly rendered. This Threepenny Opera honors the Brecht who wrote with a hammer and swung a sickle. T.E, Kalem

He's not alienated, because he has had dealings with someone who is somebody, even though he's corrupt. The important thing is to be brought...
...Elliott Gould's complaints do run on. His parents are incompetent louses, the man who started him in show business is a Fagin, the bust-up of his marriage is all what's-her-name's fault, and all his directors are just jerks in the end. Only his young son seems to have been spared such compulsive poor-mouthing-so far. Gould's irresponsible childishness on and off the screen may give a vicarious thrill to many who share his petulant self-pity, but until he grows up, this moviegoer will continue...
