...experimental touch seems to have gone in the wrong direction on “Back Numbers.” The material is a far cry from what the masterful guitarist and lyricist is capable of, instead taking on the cotton candy feel of simple, light, lovey songs that fail to impress. Oddly enough, the newly-wedded couple rarely sings together on the album, but that doesn’t prevent their mushy sentiments from bastardizing what could have been a solid record. “Back Numbers” lacks the touch that Wareham is best known for: his voluminous...

...difficulty—or, rather, the charming frustration—of this collaborative “guide” to writing. But the true joy of the collection is the strength of the writing included in it. The famed heroes and rock stars of the book do not fail to present interesting theories of nonfiction and nuggets of advice. Tom Wolfe details four technical devices of a novel that can assist narrative journalists: “scene-by-scene construction,” “the use of copious dialogue,” “the careful notation...

...Tompkins and his wife can't fail to see the irony in the accusation they are old-fashioned imperialists in a new guise. "All the fears created by the fact that I am American buying land are ridiculous," says Tompkins. "My intention has always been to eventually turn over the land to the Argentine government for a national park." He has done so once here already, donating another estate he owned in the Argentine southern region of Patagonia to the National Parks administration. Tompkins had originally bought the gigantic Monte Leon 163,000-acre sheep farm in the late 1990s...

...roommates, and Dorm Crew. The beauty of Harvard’s easy two-step system is that as long as everyone sticks to it, it works. Problems arise—such as last week’s attempted burglary in Kirkland—when both lines of defense fail. Swipe-access’s protection is rendered null when we ignore our friendly neighborhood HUPD officer’s admonitions to stop “piggybacking,” and let someone follow us into our house without swiping his or her own ID card. And even doors with locks...
