...Bartholomew Fair" was first presented in London in 1614, and for several years afterward was one of the popular places of the London stage. It is characteristic of Jonson's style, both in its realism and its character portrayal, in which it is especially strong. Its aim is to present in humorous and burlesque fashion the life and customs of the people. Like many other plays of the period, "Bartholomew Fair", contains many references to contemporary writers and playwrights, and the customary humorous flings at the Puritans and other strict sects.
