These questions will be even harder to resolve because faith in government--already shaken by scandal, gridlock and failed presidencies--is at an all-time low. And harder still because civil discourse has become a quaint affectation for a public too willing to tolerate the same screeching hyperbole in its politics that it relishes on its airwaves...
Clinton's vision in 1996 will be only a modified version of the old. He will emphasize his deficit-reducing credentials and his record on downsizing government, but he will adhere to his faith that government is not all bad, that it should do more than get out of the way, that it should create opportunity instead. He will point to polls that show Americans still want health-care reform and will promise to find a way to deliver it. He will talk about the 21st century, about the need for more education reform and better technology policies...

It seems that self-esteem is the only thing Americans score well on. Perhaps raising our students' selfesteem is not that important, and we should be focussing more on education.
