Nathan, an only child, cares for his ill mother at home in an unnamed state. Once on a thriving farm, the house now sits in a giant, fallow field, isolated except for the occasional visitor. Chief among these is the narrator, Richard, Nathan's best friend and a bit of a moralizer, and Jessica, the friend that Nathan has a secret crush on, but who's engaged to another. Things change suddenly for Nathan when Jessica sleeps with him, but has severe morning-after regrets. As if this weren't alienating enough for Nathan, his mother passes away...
James McInnes is going broke. The 45 hectares of sprawling pasture he owns in the southwestern English county of Devon lie fallow, its 70 head of cattle close to worthless. His two subsequent efforts leaned toward more conventional electric-guitar rock but failed to gain attention. (Lost Songs 95-98, a collection of tracks recorded during his more fallow days, was released this week.) Distraught and teetering on "the shitty end of the rock 'n' roll spectrum," Gray nearly gave up before deciding to turn his life-and career-around. "It had become a little claustrophobic to sit there with a guitar with the weight of all my failings...
...Freedom to Farm Act and talked about better husbandry of the land. He called farmers the "first environmentalists" and suggested expanding the conservation reserve program so that farmers could manage their land themselves but be rewarded for keeping it healthy, for instance by leaving weakened fields fallow to prevent soil erosion. Bush, on the other hand, talked in general terms about his desire to see U.S. farmers feeding the world through exports to open markets. It was unclear how this addressed the farmer's concerns. He also spoke about not using food as a diplomatic weapon, but failed to elaborate...
