...diverse array of styles. The title track is classic 70s Brazilian-sounding clap-along gold—the kind of song that you wish would follow you around all day. “Jealous of Roses,” the song that follows, runs through a similar vein, featuring falsetto funk vocals and an addictively choppy beat that is perfect for your “Shaft” moments. Also prominent on the album are textured Dabrye and J Dilla-type hip-hop break beats that, while not as catchy as the other tracks, do have bits of melody that...

...experimentation (NYU-educated, these boys have admirably eclectic taste in instruments) and plenty of minor chords, Grizzly Bear's politeness is a little oppressive. Without a hint of vocal darkness or a sudden stab of musical chaos, the lyrics gradually dissolve into a series of gumdrops, and the falsetto harmonies lose some of their charm; at its lowest, Veckatimest sounds like an album recorded by castrati at a beach house. ...1990s version of Nick Jonas might be expected to be the weak link, turns out to be Tinted Windows’ most pleasant surprise. His clear tenor is a perfect fit for this kind of music, as is his skill at both soulful strength and supple falsetto. By contrast, admirers of 90s era Smashing Pumpkins are likely to be perplexed by James Iha’s new choice of genre. Schlesinger and Carlos made their careers with bands who were characterized by their wit and verve. Tinted Windows have neither. It is fortunate, then, that this is more side project...

...opener, “Crazy Naked Girls,” which begins with random noise that leads into a simple, maddeningly addictive riff in a manner reminiscent of Pavement’s “Silence Kit.” With crisp, brief, repeated verses and a twin-falsetto chorus—“crazy, crazy, naked girls”—it is a perfect piece of fuzz pop that is implanted in the consciousness at the first listen, before a distortion-heavy guitar solo transposes the song into the genre of drugged-out epic. At over...
