Lasch's book does falter in its line of argument occasionally, but it is, on the whole, an impressive synthetic sociological treatment of a complex and important subject. Lasch cuts a wide swath through the popular literature in the social sciences, even if he almost totally denigrates its content. Haven in a Heartless World is a provocative discussion of the problems in the social science establishment which spews forth pop psychology, and in the family lives of the millions of Americans...

Throughout the frenzied two months of Anwar Sadat's peace initiative, the Egyptian President has been unfailingly optimistic. But late last week, at the close of the first round of meetings between the Israeli and Egyptian Defense Ministers in Cairo, Sadat's spirits seemed to falter. In an interview in the authoritative October magazine, Sadat said he had "absolutely no hope" that Egypt and Israel can agree on a declaration of principles that Cairo seeks as a basis for a comprehensive settlement. The peace process was in danger, he explained later, because of two important unresolved issues...

The basis of Pomme's relationships lies in her fascination with the sophisticated--exemplified in Marilyn's expensive clothing and Francois' intellectualism. Although these people strike Pomme and the audience as more "complicated" than Pomme they can't appreciate her depth of feeling. They can hurt Pomme more deeply than they can be hurt themselves. But the plot asks you to believe a capacity for hurt in Pomme so extreme that...

Mandatory retirement is an extravagant waste of people pie. I've seen the tragedy and poignancy of people being pushed out of their jobs, having their health falter because there is nothing to live for. Economically, socially and spiritually, it's wrong." The words alone would qualify Claude Denson Pepper as Congress's leading foe of mandatory retirement; the fact that the Representative from Miami is 77 years old makes him an undeniable Capitol Hill champion...
