Several of our players did share a trait with a Hall of Famer who once lived in our neighborhood: Lou Gehrig. It wasn't Larrupin' Lou's power, unfortunately, nor the longevity of the Iron Horse. Rather, it was the sensitivity of the young Gehrig, who would sit on the Yankee bench and cry if he didn't drive in an expected run. We led the league in tears if nothing else...

DIED. RICHIE ASHBURN, 70, a.k.a. Whitey, wisecracking baseball Hall of Famer who flayed the competition at the bat and on the mike; of a heart attack; in New York City. A Philly Whiz Kid in the 1950s, Ashburn was a sight in the outfield--a blond streak of pure energy. He won two batting titles, tied a major league record in putouts and later, as a Philadelphia commentator, set another in putdowns as he groused at umpires in his broad Nebraska twang...

...about the money; it was about the challenge and the tradition. Red Auerbach, the legendary coach, said he willingly gave up his title as president because "Rick has been my choice all the way down the line--I never dreamed we could get him." And Celtic Hall of Famer John Havlicek, resplendent in a green blazer, proclaimed, "This is a great day in the history of this great franchise." The love-in was so overwhelming that people wouldn't have been terribly surprised if the Celtics had announced they were adding Pitino's number to the retired numerals...

...most outstanding players to ever play the game. His decade in the majors was a portrait of excellence: a World Series, an MVP trophy, the Rookie of the Year Award (since named the Jackie Robinson Award), a six-time All-Star and, finally, a Hall-of-Famer on the first ballot. How should baseball remember a man who was more than a pioneer, one who was a truly talented player...
