GLITTER TRIPPERS. Glitter stars do not seem so much to have created their fandom as to have been created by it. The fastest-growing audience in rock dotes on the finery of such brocade, sequin, mascara-and rouge-wearing performers as Todd Rundgren, Suzi Quatro, Alice Cooper and the New York Dolls. Occasionally a glitter singer like England's bisexual David Bowie is actually good. Mostly, though, admits the Dolls' David Johansen, "the whole glitter trip is just jive." A concert can also be simply an excuse for youngsters to come out for a reasonably harmless masquerade party...
HEALTHY APPRECIATIONS no longer suffles. A weekend with the Kinks finds me emerging fullblown into fandom. Live Kinks have been called a "juiced Jersey bar band." That they are, But they're also a vehicle for Ray Davies' mad genius. I admire Davies (belatedly I'll admit) for his flagrant Englishnees and an equally flagrant aura of working class. (Davies is from London's Muswell Hill district). I admire his adamant refusal to betray those roots. He and his bend of vagrants rock on. God Save the Kinks...
Just a Fox Trotter. Beyond fashions and fandom, there was action at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue that made for a scene straight from Currier & Ives. One morning Jackie bundled Caroline and her nursery-school playmates into their snowsuits and led them out on the White House lawn. There waited Caroline's pony, Macaroni, who had been brought up from Glen Ora and was now hitched to a shiny black sleigh. Everybody piled in, and with Jackie handling the reins, the sleigh went jingling three times around the snowswept grounds. Afterwards, Jackie led Macaroni up to the French doors...
