...waterproof waxed cotton. Steve McQueen wore Belstaff in The Great Escape, Che Guevara wore it on his famous ride through South America, and racing champions like Sammy Miller were staunch supporters. In the '90s, under the threat of financial demise, Belstaff was saved by Italian racer, motorcycle designer and fan of the brand Franco Malenotti. Economic concerns eventually forced the company to relocate to Italy, but loyalist Malenotti, by transplanting the factory boss from Britain and continuing to use English materials, has ensured that the label's craftsmanship and quality continue to ride...
...fan of Bill Clinton's until he started campaigning for his wife [March 10]. For what seemed like the first time, there was overt negativity in the race, and it came from someone who wasn't even running! Hillary would have been better off standing on her own. She could have taken the high road, but Bill's words and actions pushed her off it. Unfortunately, I no longer feel the same toward the former President, and I'm sure I'm not alone. Erin Borry, NEWARK...
...Secret Mission I really loved Bob Geldof's article about President George W. Bush's policies for Africa [March 3]. Geldof made clear his opinion of Bush, but in the course of the article he also paid homage to some good the President has done. I am a fan of the President's (barely), and I didn't know about the success in Africa. Too bad Bush doesn't have enough p.r. savvy to put a spotlight on this proud legacy. I really loved the article, and Geldof's unique writing style made it work. Fred Ascher, LOS ANGELES...
...reasonable to suppose that Heather Mills isn't the world's greatest Beatles fan, but today she might well believe in yesterday. Less than 24 hours after she emerged from London's Royal Courts of Justice to pronounce herself "very, very happy" with her 24.3 million pound ($49 million) divorce settlement from Paul McCartney, she failed in a bid to stop the judge who decided the award from publishing his reasons for doing so. She said she was appealing against publication to protect the privacy of her four-year-old daughter Beatrice, apparently the only positive issue of the less...
...lzer, who calls himself "perhaps a little old-fashioned," is not a fan of M.B.A.s. "I favor a system where you learn how to think, how to combine things, how to set priorities," he says. "The subject you studied in school doesn't mean anything. What is significant is the training of your brain. My doctorate is in logistics, and I never worked in logistics, while our head of production logistics did his doctorate in nuclear physics." What he instead values most is instinct. "But you have to train that instinct," he notes...
