Company's Coming! This very unfunny comedy has as engaging a comedienne (Frieda Inescort, late of Napi), as droll a farceur (Lynne Overman of Just Married) and as stupid a script as has been professionally presented for a long time. Ridden to death is the story of a poor young tennis player (Mr. Overman), who must pawn a cup he has not quite won for keeps. Included in the complications are a fake holdup, a real holdup, beer, neighbors, a bull pup, a baby. Also joining in the ruckus is a visitor from Atlanta whose attempt at the dialect...
...highly exciting stunt flying that is the climax of the action. It is all about a timid novelist who, as the author of a work on aviation, has to go up in a plane for the first time in his life. In The Hottentot, Edward Everett Horton, able farceur of this piece, was a fake jockey whom the horses frightened more than anything else in the world. The Aviator is a rewrite of The Hottentot and Horton works his familiar comic business into it without many additions but fairly effectively. Patsy Ruth Miller looks pretty, talks agreeably. Best shot: arranging...
...bicycle and a bishop, both nude, but appearing in total darkness. His wife Sena (Phoebe Foster) is painting a geometrical portrait of Percival Redingote (Alan Mowbray) who, in turn, is about to carve a bust of Sena. Because Miss Foster is a brittle beauty, Mr. Morgan an absurd farceur, and Jo Mielziner, who designed the scenery, knows how to burlesque the futuristic trend, this satire on ultra-modern estheticism by Novelist Ernest Pascal (The Marriage Bed) has its memorable moments. What the quaint older generation would have called a love affair occurs to Sena and Percival. To them...
...Love Doctor (Paramount). In the theatre this was The Boomerang, an unpretentious comedy about a doctor and a pretty nurse. As a talking picture built around that able farceur Richard Dix, it is satisfactory entertainment?even at times uproarious. It may be fairly evident when the doctor tells his nurse how to arouse the symptoms of love in a patient that she is going to practice the knowledge on him, but obviousness rather accentuates than spoils the comedy. Best shot: Dix telling his fiancée about his new job at the lunatic asylum...
David Belasco's It's a Wise Child, by virtue of its title and the presence of Harlan Briggs, spry farceur, should be racy, garrulous. A comedy, Dinner Is Served, by one Alan Mowbray, will include the author in its cast...
