...make a dollar, and Hickok, to drink and gamble his way into oblivion. "Hickok was acutely aware of his time having passed," says Carradine. "He had outlived his usefulness." Throw in abused prostitute Trixie (Paula Malcomson); Alma Garret, a laudanum-addicted lady from back East (Molly Parker); and E.B. Farnum, a hotel owner and Swearengen's beaten-cur sycophant (William Sanderson, Newhart's Larry), and you have a typical--if dysfunctional--horse-opera cast...

ALSO FINE is Margaret Downey as Adele Farnum, Shrike's target. Aided by apt makeup and costuming, she fits comfortably into the '30s atmosphere, capturing well the archness of the classic tease. Miss Lonelyhearts' newsroom colleagues also do a more than adequate job. Derek Pajaczkowski as Ned Gates, "The failure incarnate," swings adroitly between hope and bitterness, and Brian Foley as "Flash" Goldsmith excels at wry faces. ...head of a syndicate that included a struggling vaudeville producer named Jesse Lasky and a glove salesman named Sam Goldfish (later Goldwyn), it was enough that he had the drive and energy to put together The Squaw Man, Hollywood's first full-length flicker, with He-Man Dustin Farnum. By the time DeMille produced his fifth movie, The Man from Home, in 1914, he was a slick showman. He was experimenting with artificial lighting, using shading to create the illusion of depth. When a wire from Goldwyn complained that exhibitors would pay only half price for a half...
