...been tried in the fire of the nation's anti-communist paranoia. Brought before the House Committee on Un-American activities, Fast refused to release a list of contributors to the Spanish Refugee Appeal, a group providing medical help to the Spanish Republican forces opposing Franco's fascist movement. This refusal earned Fast, a director of the organization, a three-month term in jail for contempt of Congress. And for years afterward Fast was unable to find a publisher who would handle his work...
...recounts the girls' adolescent escapades while revealing the foundations of the political beliefs that will eventually take Julia from medical school at Oxford to a workers' community in Vienna. The women are separated through most of their lives; but Julia's need for Hellman's aid in her anti-fascist activities prior to World War II reunite them, with repercussions that even a writer of dime state spy fiction would envy...
Antonietta and Gabriele have little in common except their loneliness, but they meet and become fast friends. Their relationship soon provides the film makers with an excuse to explore the sexual underpinnings of Fascist ideology. Ultimately, A Special Day's apocalyptic atmosphere provides the perfect backdrop for its star's performance. When Antonietta seizes her moment of passion in this frigid world, Loren's warmth can-and does-burn...
...while most students and faculty are quick to disavow terrorism, they also charge that the government is overreacting-particularly against students-in an atmosphere of hysteria. "Oh God!" cried one Berlin student after learning of the Schleyer kidnaping. "One step closer to a fascist state." When a lampoon appeared at Gottingen University with a "non-obit" for Schleyer, tastelessly referring to his limited options of a "shabby life" or a "shabby death," police staged a three-hour search of the student-government building, its printing offices and two apartments. They seized 33 copies of the pamphlet, and the university rector...
