...Librarian. Anti-Fascist Alcide de Gasperi was a regular inmate of Mussolini's prisons until, his health broken, he was let out in 1929. He spent the next 14 years in the quiet of the Vatican Library-as a clerk, filing index cards. He stretched his $80-a-month salary, on which he supported a wife and four daughters, by translating from the German at a nickel a page. Meanwhile, he kept in touch with his fellow Christian Democrats, and when Mussolini fell, a skeleton Christian party was ready. By April 1945 De Gasperi was Italy's Foreign...
...secretary brought disturbing news. Negotiations for a solid anti-Communist alliance in next month's municipal elections in southern Italy were collapsing. The monarchists, probably the third largest party in the south, were demanding as their price for joining the Demochristian alliance that the neo-Fascist M.S.I. party also be admitted. Unless De Gasperi yielded, Rome, Naples and Bari might well elect Communist mayors and councils. A Red Rome next month might mean a Red Italy next year, at the general elections. ...what press freedom means or even what the "public interest" is. Nevertheless, the code was halfheartedly voted. Binder and the British representative refused to approve it, along with the Soviet Union, which wants a tighter code defining the "main task" of the press as counteracting war propaganda and Fascist ideas. Next big step: a world conference of journalists to approve the code. If it is approved, it will still be only a "recommendation" for journalists, not a law. But any nation that wants to bat down newsmen will find the code a handy club...
...probably have read recently about neo-nazism in Germany, about the dangerous revival of fascist ideas in Germany. I want to say a word today about what German students think and do about it. The director of what probably was the most anti-Semitic movie ever made under the Nazi regime, Veit Harlan was acquitted some years ago in a denazification court. This threw the way open to him to go back into the celluloid industry. But in spite of the legal acquittal, Germans did not think that the question was settled...
...action-packed years as A.F.L. representative in Europe, Irving Brown has become one of the Americans that Communists know best-and hate most. In Belgium Communists call him "the grey eminence of the yellow international," in Italy "Scarface, the notorious American fascist racketeer," in Prague "the chief union splitter." Tass has accused him of everything from forging Cominform documents to shipping German virgins to Africa "to amuse young Americans."* Last week Brown was in Washington reporting to A.F.L. leaders on how he had earned such Red epithets...
