Easy Rider is directed in consummately trippy fashion by Hopper, who once had an intensely hip handlebar mustache before he went on to portray drunks and psychopaths in 80s films. He and Fonda virtually define late 60s cool here, at once aloof (or stoned) and utterly self-righteous. Yet despite the absurdity of their ideas and appearance, the freaks in this film do seem to be free, if only in a very misguided way, and seem infinitely preferable to the straight-laced types they combat. ...that make that great ping-pong-paddle-on-naugahyde noise. Lots of low-life Texans, criminals, Mexicans and innocent bystanders get shot. Half the time characters fire upon people they've already killed just to make sure the corpses don't spring to life in Day Of The Dead-fashion. And gradually, the audience gets the point of this film and begins to laugh out loud...

Unfortunately for Shoeless Joe Jackson, though, this statistic is "not officially recognized" by Major League Baseball because of Joe's ever-so-tenuous connection with the Black Sox game-fixing scandal of 1919.
