...North has also been using ground radar in a more sophisticated fashion to track incoming bombers and has enabled its pilots to exploit an American blind spot. Knowing that U.S. pilots have to locate their targets-and must take pains to avoid restricted areas-the MIGs have been climbing above the clouds and out of sight to await the attackers. Then they swoop down like hawks, rip through a U.S. squadron with guns ablaze and vanish into the blue. With such tactics, the MIGs have lately shot down almost as many planes as they have lost-though the U.S. still...
...free-enterprising fashion, Kenneth T. Jones, a big, affable North Carolinian who came to the Pacific as a Seabee during the war, is as effective as the missionaries. Jones stayed on in the U.S. possession of Guam, amassed a $10 million fortune in supermarkets, department stores, motels, hotels, a construction company and ranching-and is increasingly spreading out into the nearby trust territories. Next week on Saipan he will open Micronesia's first modern hotel, the Royal Taga. Were it not for the tyranny of fashion, which insistently summons men to the barber, they might all conform to the Book of Leviticus, which commands that "Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard." In these shaggy times, which can produce a Van Cliburn, an Allan Ginsberg and a Joe Namath, not to mention the Beatles, the Monkees...
Here is where the events of last Saturday became tragic: the military treated anti-war resistance just as they would have handled common criminals. Had they arrested demonstrators in a firm but orderly fashion, instead of clubbing them before dragging them to the paddywagons, the violence would have been contained. Instead of provoking a bloodbath, the U.S. Marshals could have confronted each of the demonstrators individually, told him that he was under arrest for trespassing and lead him away. Certainly by nightfall, when most of the press had left, the large majority of the demonstrators would have preferred this...
