...they are called, proved themselves miracles of gameness, endurance, and speed as their record of 7.17 1/2 in the short race and 18.44 1/2 in the three-mile race shows. The times for all the test-races are found to be from 8 1/2 to 10 seconds too fast, as the course - which was laid out by guesswork - proved, on being surveyed after the races, to be 130 feet 9 inches short of the proper distance. Hence the exact speed of the crews over a course of the proper length can only be guessed at. Altogether the regatta cannot...
...Bicycle Race produced capital sport, every inch of the three miles being closely contested. It was, we believe, the first race ridden by amateurs in the country. Next fall, with a proper cinder track on Holmes or Jarvis, we hope to see larger fields of starters and equally fast and close races. The time made in all the events proves that as athletes we are, with proper training, inferior to none. A little self-denial, more and harder exercise, and regular, quiet living, comprise the essentials to high condition. It would seem that men who have proved their ability...
Yale. - The Athletic Sports of this college came off, on May 29, at New Haven. F. W. Brown, '78, won the 100-yards dash in 10 1/4 sec, which is wonderfully fast time. H. L. Livingston, '79, won the half-mile run in 2 min. If this time is correct, and the distance run was 880 yards, it is the fastest amateur time in America by some seconds; and we think, although we have not the records at hand just now, that it is very nearly the best amateur time ever made. Mr. Livingston also won the quarter-mile...
...rode over a cinder path. When our University Bicycle Club is organized, and a good track has been laid on Holmes or Jarvis, we have no doubt that 11.31 will be equalled and beaten. The race at Beacon Park last week shows that we have the material for fast time; careful training will do the rest...
Cambridge University Athletic Sports. - These sports were concluded March 31, and, in spite of rain and heavy wind, the time made in the "hundred" and "hurdles" was remarkably fast, while the distance covered in the long jump was most extraordinary, the trial-jumps being the five longest consecutive jumps on record, and in individual length very near the best. 100 yards, G. H. Dodd (Caius), 10 2/5 sec.; 880 yards, W. W. Bolton (Caius), 2 min. 4 sec.; 120-yards hurdles, S. Palmer (Corpus), 16 2/5 sec.; 120-yards handicap, J. P. Muspratt (Trinity Hall), (11-yards' start...
