This is Spoon River Anthology meets Saturday Night Live, an anachronistic blend of reckless humor and ironic pathos that goes down easiest when it's not taking itself too seriously. Unfortunately, they're only half-kidding when they promise to "warm the cockles of your heart." Following a fast-paced first act, the second half becomes weighed down in soul-searching soliloquies, a last try at serious reflection that comes too late in the show. ...funny. The teacher who rules as a pseudo-intellectual guru over his class is hilarious. So is Lane's battle against the unrequited love songs that invade his car stereo. These gags play on the real perceptions of teenage life in a surreal way, like the better moments of Fast Times at Ridgemont High. But most of the gags are borrowed from the more common genre of teenage film. ...simple, yet intriguing plot line is richly embellished with everything from irate terrorists to a put-upon canine named Einstein. As usual, the Spielberg humor is fast-paced and upbeat, whirling us into the crazy fantasy world with little effort and certainly no resistance...
