Robert Mackle, who has one other child-a 24-year-old son-made it clear that he wanted to deal with the kidnapers as fast as possible to ensure his daughter's safe return. Contact was made and Mackle stuffed a large suitcase with old $20 bills to the amount of $500,000. Following orders, he dropped it into Biscayne Bay on Thursday morning, just offshore from a stretch of overgrown lots south of downtown Miami. A local resident, wakened at 5 a.m. by the sound of an approaching outboard, saw a white Boston Whaler being beached...

...years of playing man-for-man defense-a rarity among college teams-Marsalis figures to make the transition into the pros with ease. He has "sprinter's speed plus the mean streak you need to play corner." Maxwell, in the terse, tight lingo of the scouting reports, is: "Fast, with good hands. Covers a lot of ground. Likes to play it tight. Tough." If he were not a junior, another top contender is Jake Scott, Georgia, 6 ft. 1 in., 190 Ibs. He is a blue-streak threat on punt returns. When he becomes available, some scouts contemplate using...

Nyaahnyaah. Like a medieval collection of Games People Play, but they play them so fast we lose track. Back and forth, one by one every character confronts every other and asks point-blank "Why didn't you love me?" And one by one, tediously, every character replies in the best spirit of medieval modern psychoanalysis. It's as if some Pinter couple, perverted, got its kicks...

...camera doesn't help the actors out of their predicament. This is the first major film in a long time with noticeably bad editing--too fast in the action scenes, too slow and repetitive during the interminable quarrels. The Panavision closeups are appealing, especially O'Toole's leonine face and downcast eyes, but there are far too many. Had the camera roamed somewhat it might've caught more of the period feeling, as in Welles' Chimes at Midnight. As it is, the few long shots are obtrusive reminders that we are outside the whole story--like a piece of scenery...

...signs of this new rock is its emphasis on intricate rhythmic patterns of voices. The Family Stone manage to carry these off on both fast and slow songs but Chaka was successful mainly on the up-tempo numbers. Gilbert Moses on lead guitar contributes deft Cropper-like touches, and the band generally held together well--particularly on a superb sliding easy version of "My Girl." This new city-soul sound is, of course, heavily influenced by Booker T., and Chaka showed this in its obvious delight and skill at playing "funky instrumentals...
