VIAGRA, UP OR DOWN? A confusing week for Viagra users. Preliminary analysis of cases reported to the FDA has found 1,500 heart attacks, arrhythmias and strokes--some fatal--in men who popped the impotence pill. Particularly troubling, most of the guys probably weren't on nitrates for angina or hypertension. (Nitrates are a no-no when taking Viagra.) Scary? Another study--financed by Pfizer, Viagra's maker--concludes that heart problems from the drug are rare, at least among low-risk men. If you're at all worried, check with your doc before checking out Viagra...

...certainly looks fatal to the industry's current business model. Sure, free music has long been available to listeners: it's called radio, and a few people have made a few bucks from the medium. But the crucial difference comes down to a business-school concept known as option value. One of the reasons you are--or were--willing to pay $17 for a CD is that you can listen to it whenever you want, as many times as you want. In December King also participated in a fund-raising test of the same "digital rights management" technology that is supposed to copy-protect downloaded files. Last year he pushed the limits of other publishing outlets, releasing a three-story collection called "Blood and Smoke" exclusively in audio book format. In a statement about his new download, King said, "I'm curious to see what sort of response...

...that our culture seems to value therapy over self-reliance. (When was the last time you heard anyone tell a kid to buck up?) In general, I think our children need less medication and talk therapy and more work, responsibility and parental attention. However, your reference to the movie Fatal Attraction gives me pause. What if the Glenn Close character had a few sessions with a good counselor? Might the family bunny have been spared? I gather that your daughter is self-medicating with Aimee Mann CDs and scented candles. And she's fortunate to have close girlfriends, the first...
