...occur in normal fashion; but only a, i, o and u may fill out what is ordinarily a quorum of 26. "Huh?" you may gasp, "no ...?" Shhhh! Do not think or, God forbid, say it, at any cost. To do so in this book is always risky and usually fatal...
...screenwriter Paul Attanasio are great guys to waste time with. As he's proved with Quiz Show, the latter has a real flair for writing strong, confrontational scenes--brisk, needling, well shaped--and the former stages them with coolly concentrated intensity. And the cast is terrific. Douglas, with Fatal Attraction and Basic Instinct behind him, knows all about playing male victimization without total loss of amour propre. Moore's ferocity is totally unredeemed, therefore totally riveting. Donald Sutherland as their boss is computer-like: he has an almost-human brain and a silicon chip where his heart should be. Trouble is that Balladur, quite unexpectedly, became the darling of the opinion polls and the front runner for the presidency. One by one, conservative leaders, including 25 of 29 current Cabinet members, deserted Chirac for Balladur. The defections need not be fatal for Chirac: he still claims the support of 240 of the R.P.R.'s 350 Senators and Deputies and appears to have the majority of the Gaullist rank and file on his side. There is still no cure for the disease, but the new treatment will ameliorate the painful symptoms of sickle cell anemia, which often lead to hospitalization. About 8 percent of black Americans carry the gene that causes sickle cell...
...that they will time and again be employed to defend the budget deficit against brutal assault at the hands of fiscal responsibility. When in February 1993 President Clinton proposed an energy tax that was hailed by economists and environmentalists, something called the Energy Tax Policy Alliance paid for a fatal multimedia campaign. When he suggested in the same budget plan cutting the business-lunch deduction from 80% to 50%, it was the National Restaurant Association that stirred to action, sending local TV stations satellite feeds of busboys and waitresses fretting about their imperiled jobs. And the restaurateurs hired Jack Bonner...
