...despite its unoriginal premise. Where other movies would be cranking up bathos-filled love songs, Next Stop Wonderland plays toe-tapping Brazilian music. When other actresses would be weeping over a picture of their ex, Erin contemplatively stares out at the ocean or reads her late father's poetry. Fate may bring the happy couple together under its wing, but we get the feeling that they would be okay even if they never met. As the Wonderland promo posters say, "Love is the destination." Schine leaves us with a paraphrased section of a biology text and a set of journal entries sparkling with banality. At one point, underdeveloped character aboard ship Gloria screams, "Blame it one the stars!" Perhaps they are the culprits. But fate aside, Freud, Marx and all of the jargon undermine Schine's witty prose. As Jane's mother tells her daughter, the reader might associate with the author: "You are a girl of conviction. I admire that...

Autumn just got chillier for Chile's patriarch. The Spanish government on Friday formalized its request to extradite General Augusto Pinochet, leaving the ex-dictator's fate in the hands of Britain's House of Lords.
