...children live in Chicago's Cabrini slum-clearance project. They are mostly fatherless Negroes and Puerto Ricans whose mothers work or are on relief. "Some of the older ones had hands that didn't even operate like hands," says the school's director, Marcella Morrison, who taught in Chicago public schools before she went to Greenwich for a year of Montessori training at Nancy Rambusch's Whitby School. "They had never been given anything to handle." At first they were a reserved, hostile bunch, and Director Morrison found that she could barely even talk with them...
...story. He is Driss ben Hamed Charhadi, a North African Arab whose language is Moghrebi (an Arabic dialect), and who has been shepherd, baker's deliveryman, carpenter and kif salesman. With the encouragement of Bowles and the help of a tape recorder, Charhadi narrated the life of a fatherless child growing up in the boondocks of French Morocco. But it is filmed with taste and acted in crisp style, particularly by Alan Badel as a witty geneticist who strikes just that note of detachment that makes the whole thing seem lightly plausible. The movie...
...this rule in The First Day of Friday. Good Intentions is there all right (young Michael Duff, the impoverished Protestant squire who wants only to marry his Dulcie and persuade his servant Atracta to cook breakfast on time). So are Sedition and Salvation (respectively Atracta, the mindless mother of fatherless triplets, and her confessor, the insane but otherwise reasonable Father Behan). There is, furthermore, the besotted yardman Tomo who leads a bull into Michael Duff's kitchen for reasons that to him, at least, seem perfectly logical at the time...
...dimmest object visible to the naked human eye. It has no tail, no central nucleus, and it is probably receding from the earth. But in the history of astronomy, it has a singular distinction: it was found by a 19-year-old lathe operator, chief support of a fatherless family, who made his own telescope...
