...also the story of an apartment in Bangkok, and tourists lured there by a pleasant Frenchman, a beacon of polite familiarity in an unfamiliar continent. Thompson describes how one by one, couples and lone tourists fell prey to the magic of Sobhraj. Sobhraj's powers are almost impossible to fathom--as even the author admits--but the naivete of those who fall into his trap is even harder to understand. "Months later," Thompson writers, "an Interpol detective in Paris, would study the case and wonder why in the name of God these poor people didn't figure out what...

...cords running from arms to torso. Dooley moves with admirable lightness, assisted by John Morris' delicate flutes, harp and chimes. His speech, however, is erratic; and his discourse (in a harpy's disguise) to the villainous nobles is an almost total loss. In "Come unto these yellow sands," "Full fathom five," and "Where the bee sucks" Ariel has three of Shakespeare's loveliest lyrics; but Morris' supporting vocalists cannot hide the fact that Dooley is simply no singer. The yardstick for the role remains Clayton Corzatte--who moved, spoke and sang to perfection...

Intellectually it goes deeper than this; Hackman pain-stakingly and convincingly becomes a man who just can't handle the perversity and technical inhumanity of his occupation, and who begins to fathom the horror of people like him turning around and persecuting people like him. Dramatically, its suspense becomes brilliantly tense (in the sanitary paper wrapped around the motel toilet seat scene, for example). A good film, more disturbing the second time around...

...find this attitude rather remarkable. An American scholar is lauded if he studies the works of Euro-American authors: an Irish critic is honored if he knows the intricacies of Mr. Joyce. One is called perceptive if he can fathom why Beckett is waiting for Godot, of if indeed Pirandello's characters are really in search of an author or vice-versa. Indeed, one admires Pirandello's technical brilliance and his choice of metaphysical subject matter. Yet if and when one decides that the socio-psychological realism of Toni Morrison is indeed of tremendous literary significance or that Margaret Walker...

...restaurant in Manhattan, at which, another Revlon executive recalls, the clatter of dishes kept drowning out Revson's words, and Revson could scarcely fathom Bergerac's accent; neither understood much of what the other said. Bergerac remembers asking Revson at another meeting: "Why do you want somebody like me? I have been associated for a long time with basically technical products, so I know a fair amount about factories, marketing and technical engineering, but ..." Revson's reply: "I know all that, but you have one thing this company needs. You know how to make money...
