Many a U.S. militaryman has privately argued the case for Spain as a potential naval base and a possible beachhead for the Army in case of a Russian blitz on Western Europe. Last week this argument was enough to win Franco a fat $100 million loan from the U.S. Senate. When Nevada's white-haired Pat McCarran, who had once enjoyed Franco's hospitality, brought up his perennial resolution to give Spain a big slice of Marshall Plan money, he found the Senate surprisingly receptive. Administration leaders managed to keep the money from coming...

...similar fashion the Senate kept interrupting its urgent business all last week to make bows to the folks back home. Illinois' big, white-shocked Paul Douglas, singularly unbowed after threescore attempts to chop the omnibus appropriations bill, was back like a nagging conscience at the Senate's fat, pampered $700 million program for pet home-town works. The bill, said Douglas, has many features dubious in peacetime, "and even more dubious in wartime." Six eastern Republicans agreed with him, and proposed a flat...

The air-raid warning system was complicated: in addition to sirens, colored lanterns were hung from poles at night (when they were lit, it meant that the enemy was approaching; when they were suddenly dropped, it meant that the planes were almost over head). But the system worked. Night after night most of Chungking's people trudged to the big caves outside the town where most of them slept...

...crew improved its shooting. Affectionately they tagged the Juneau "the galloping ghost of the Korean coast." Officers who remembered the Solomons campaign spoke of the beat between southern Japan and Korea as "The Little Slot." Said a junior officer: "This is the only way to fight war for me, fat and happy, waiting for it to come to you. Good chow, showers and clean bunk." Rear Admiral John Higgins, whose flag is in the Juneau, smiled happily. This was what the Navy called esprit de corps. The Juneau headed back to her base in Japan to get more ammunition...

...quick succession he got fat parts in Maxwell Anderson's short-lived Truckline Cafe, Katharine Cornell's production of Candida and Ben Hecht's A Flag Is Born. In 1947, he found himself an overnight Broadway sensation as the brutish lout of a husband in A Streetcar Named Desire. He is still not certain that he fully "succeeded in some aspects of the part," in spite of the fact that one critic called him "our theater's most memorable young actor at his most memorable...
