Unfortunately, all this promises more crises and convulsions in 1968. The con fusion tends to confirm extremist notions that U.S. institutions are moribund, that the only solution is to uproot society and start afresh. Only the fatuous deny that too many courts, legislatures, federal agencies and universities have grown unmindful of their duty to liberate rather than constrict. Yet in advanced countries, institutions cannot be eliminated; the infinitely complex problems of crime or poverty require organized experts. There is no Gordian knot waiting to be slashed. To yearn for apocalypse and reject the real task-to reform failing institutions...
...searching for a companion to accompany him on the "long journey," he encounters among others Fellowship (a fatuous, war buddy, fisherman), Strength (a bull dike), Knowledge (resembling Anna May Wong), and Good Deeds (Susan Channing in high style: a beautiful sometime cripple portrayed bitterly as a discarded lover). The action is largely set against the party, usually in silent swing upstage, and much of it is filmed by a little boy with a movie camera who rejects Everyman's plea for companionship by saying, "My life's a silver screen: lots of hand-held stuff, but no adventure flicks." ...critic is an avid lecher and blurb-confectioner, the other an intellectual exegete who would ponder the "human condition" in a pile of burning rubbish. Just such rubbish is put before both men in a fatuous mystery play. In a way, Hound is a miniaturized travesty of R. and G., since the two critics cannot grasp the play they are watching any better than R. and G. could fathom Hamlet. The critics become unintentionally involved in the action and are both shot to death. Stoppard is a ' word mimic and a born parodist. But parody is parasitic and needs...
...have variously contributed to Girl Talk's success as the brightest female panel discussion in television. Last week, at the urging of her ABC packagers ("They thought the show needed a little goosing-up"), Virginia introduced her first male panelist, David Merrick. The show bombed (Merrick was positively fatuous), and at its close, Virginia asked for a mail-in referendum on further gentlemen callers...
...brought back the virtue Hope to the American political scene. Regrettably, the Senator's antiwar campaign is also based on hope, not reality. The Senator hopes that if we stop the bombing there will be peace-as if events had not cast even the slightest discredit upon such fatuous wishing. Until the Communists show an interest in a just peace that does not involve simple N.L.F. takeover, a bombing halt would be merely a quixotic exercise in futility...
