Nothing in Reading for Fun is lifeless, though some of Berenson's entries are highly esoteric, and his scorn of modern literature very nearly amounts to a total eclipse of what was around him. He thought the works of T. S. Eliot, Joyce, Gertrude Stein, Faulkner and Hemingway largely rubbish. But even Aladdin had only one lamp, and Bernard Berenson had burnished his insights too long over the magnificence of Renaissance Italy to find the modern age other than trifling and tawdry. At book's end he seems to step back into a quattrocento painting like a visitor...

Aristocracy, like fine cheese, is usually at its most interesting in an advanced state of decay. Chekhov demonstrated this in prerevolutionary Russia, William Faulkner in post-Civil War America. Theoretically the decline of the Austro-Hungarian nobility before and after World War I ought to make equally pungent fiction. Unfortunately this is only sometimes the case in Author de Born's new novel, the second installment of a trilogy (the first, Felding Castle, published early last year, was set in 1900 and carried a nostalgic remembrance of that time of sunlit lawns, masquerade balls and respectful peasants...

Woodworking Works. Disaffection with the times is the common ingredient. Predictably, the writer who has mixed the smoothest cup of brine is The New Yorker's John Cheever. With his oft-repeated visions of suburbia under a lowering sky, the author is obviously following Faulkner's lead by creating a kind of Yoknapatawpha, Conn. The fact that there are no Snopeses and not even very much crab grass in the commuters' heaven adds wry emphasis to Cheever's reiterated question.
