What caused the loss of the Kursk remained unclear. Russian officials fell back on old Soviet habits of secrecy and confusion during the first days of the disaster. They made no announcement for two days, then issued a bland statement that there had been a "technical fault" and the boat was on the sea bottom. After the seriousness of the accident became clearer, Defense Minister Igor Sergeyev declared that there was "incontrovertible evidence" that the sub had collided with another vessel. In past years Soviet and U.S. vessels have had near collisions while spying on each other, but the Pentagon...
...even fictional presidential brothers are causing headaches. JOE ESTEVEZ, sibling of West Wing Oval Office sitter and lefty activist MARTIN SHEEN, recorded a very Sheen-like voice-over for a convention ad touting the decidedly right-wing Hunting and Shooting Sports Heritage Foundation. While it's not Estevez's fault that he sounds exactly like his brother, a firearms-industry representative says the hire was no accident. "Let's just say this: We really liked the voice because we thought it would be recognizable for people to associate with." Estevez has been an actor for years, in such works...
...wishes that he would say the problem is not simply a budgetary one. The problem is a structural one. The Republicans can properly fault the Clinton administration for giving so little attention to the restructuring of the post-Cold War force." -Andrew Bacevich, national security expert at Boston University...
...recalls stories his mother used to tell of Bess Myerson's selection as Miss America, "how thrilled they were that a Jewish girl was seen as pretty enough to be chosen. In a more profound way, this touches the same chords." But to those familiar with Judaism's internal fault lines there is an irony in Al Gore's embrace of--and America's fascination with--Joe Lieberman's style of observance. For decades, Modern Orthodoxy has taken a drubbing from its left and its right. Many were convinced it was doomed to speedy disappearance...
TEEN MOMS National birth rates may be up, but through no fault of teenagers. Births to teens ages 15 to 19 declined 3% last year (20% over the past decade) to the lowest rate since recordkeeping began 60 years ago. The drop for teens 15 to 17 was more striking--6% last year--and most dramatic for black teens--30% over the past decade. Praise, said the Department of Health and Human Services, must go straight to parents and to savvier teens, most of them unmarried, who are apparently planning their future with a greater degree of wisdom...
