Died. Andre Derain, 74, one of the leading French painters of the 20th century; of injuries suffered when he was struck by an automobile; in Garches, France. A member, with Rouault and Matisse, of the uninhibited Fauvist movement in Paris at the turn of the century, tall, simplicity-loving Artist Derain ("The great danger for art lies in an excess of culture") later dabbled with cubism, finally turned to a personalized style of calm, uncluttered elegance that put him among the world's most respected painters...
...anything, Georges Braque seemed to grow younger with years. Ranging the gallery walls were 32 paintings as fresh and varied as those of any young hopeful struggling to find a "style." There were clear Normandy seascapes, bright Fauvist landscapes, familiar cubist figures, tight abstractions, and soft, flowing still lifes. Died. Othon Friesz, 69, French landscape painter; of a cerebral thrombosis; in Paris. With Matisse and Dufy, Friesz revolted against impressionism by helping to found the controversial Fauvist (freedom of expression) school of painting...
