...which is predictable -- but not too predictable. Lodge is a writer who seems to favor schematic setups precisely because they enable him to play sly variations on the formulas. Left-wing Robyn, for example, decries Vic's factory as a hellish model of capitalism in extremis and dismisses his maneuvers against rival companies as "a lot of little dogs squabbling over bones." Yet while tagging along to a trade show in Frankfurt, she can't resist helping him bring off a negotiating coup for a piece of automatic machinery that will replace several workers. Vic charges that Robyn's scholarly...
Born in 1928 into a doctor's family, Doi belongs to the country's minuscule but politically active Protestant minority. "Originally, I wanted to be a doctor too," says Doi. "My parents were in favor of the idea that girls should study and try to be independent like men." Eventually, after studying English at a women's college, Doi chose instead to take law at Doshisha University, where she saw a movie about the young Abraham Lincoln. "I will have to be like Lincoln," she recalls thinking to herself. "A supporter of the weak...
...flare-up of factional feuding was of particular concern to Pakistan and the U.S., which have long feared that internal disputes might divert the rebels from fighting the Najibullah government. Washington urged the mujahedin to forgo further infighting in favor of the "vital work of improving unity and coordination" at a time when the Kabul regime is increasingly assertive on the military and political fronts -- and the guerrillas' drive has faltered. Whatever the fallout, the prospect for future unity is bleak. U.S. analysts fear that once Najibullah is ousted, mujahedin factions will turn on one another in the effort...
What is easily forgotten in this argument is the right of citizen taxpayers. They send representatives to Washington who are answerable for the expenditure of funds exacted from them. In general these voters want to favor their own values if government is going to get into the culture-subsidizing area at all (a proposition many find objectionable in itself). Politicians, insofar as they support the arts, will tend to favor conventional art (certainly not masochistic art). Anybody who doubts that has no understanding of a politician's legitimate concern for his or her constituents' approval. Besides, it is quaint...
Speaker Thomas S. Foley (D-Wash.) said at a news conference after the vote that the bill would come up in September and he couldn't imagine why any lawmaker would favor amending the constitution if a regular statute would protect the flag...
