...Jerry Stahl was shooting up and working as a highly paid writer for "Alf." The movie Jerry Stahl works as a writer for an "alien puppet show" called "Mr. Chompers," who is green instead of orange. As Jerry becomes more adicted, he becomes ore L.A., foregoing real food in favor of shots of wheatgrass and running five miles every day (after a quick pick-me-up). We watch Jerry's appetite for smack turn to one for cuddling. Lauren Mechling...

Sadly, the empty tables at Baja Mexican Cantina do not testify to the fact that it succeeds where Harvard Square's Border Cafe fails. Perhaps this is in reality another nod in Baja's favor. Located in the increasingly yuppified South End, Baja benefits from decor that is unabrasively funky. The windows and the bar are framed by red plastic chile lights, sombreros grace the walls and bright green cactus sculptures are sunk into cavities in the walls. Triangular flags pushing tequila brands are a tribute to kitsch, but the gestalt works well, set off under a trendy corrugated...

...Jones suit before an appeals court revives it. Jones demanded $1 million (but no apology), Clinton offered $500,000, and the two sides are still talking, with a resolution possible sometime this week. But impeachment moves still seem unavoidable: the Republican-controlled Judiciary committee is expected to vote in favor of launching such an inquiry by next week, and the full House would then prepare to start hearings sometime after the November elections. In the bloodless trench warfare over the Clinton presidency, it seems to matter little that Americans want a swift outcome. But it is fair to ask: What...

...century ago, the International Meridian Conference did Fiji a favor. The conferees laid out the international date line along the 180th meridian but put an eastward kink in it to keep the people of the far-flung islands of the Fijian archipelago on the same page of their day planners. Now Fijians are calling that good turn a bad one. Repudiating the date line as an artificial construct, they claim their country, which straddles the 180th line of longitude, will be the first to greet the year...

...First District: Hillary Clinton, whose tribulations have helped make her the hottest ticket on this season's fund-raising circuit. More than 200 Oregonians paid $250 each to Wu's underfinanced campaign to hear the First Lady declare over lunch, "We need to change the Congress!" The biggest favor Clinton did for Wu was to remind Democrats there is an election coming up and offer them a rationale for voting in a year when turnout promises to set a record low. Even in Oregon, where mail-in balloting makes voting convenient, two-thirds of those registered...
