...with the crowded and tired facilities and classes of the Malkin Athletic Center (MAC) and House gyms, several students have chosen to forgo their free memberships to Harvard fitness centers in favor of a pricier workout at private gyms, such as the Wellbridge Athletic Club near the Charles Hotel...

Last Thursday, at various campaign stops, Kerry was forced to say--over and over, to the point of understandable exasperation--that he opposes gay marriage and disagrees with his state's court ruling. But he also favors civil unions for gay couples and would vote against a U.S. constitutional amendment. You can find a consistent line here: Kerry thinks the matter should be left to states. But in a debate as raw as the one over same-sex unions, President Bush's simple position--marriage should be between a man and a woman--will be easier to explain, not least...

A culture that tells young men they can't formulate a thought deeper than "Show us your tits." A culture that pushes young women to put out for the market, then ridicules them when they do. A culture swinging between cynical sex-sells greed and moral parentalism. A culture obsessed by, and terrified of, a human organ that gives sustenance to babies. And a culture that apparently can't tell the difference between contextually appropriate nudity and a rape fantasy...

...that brings us back to Dishman at Intel, who doesn't necessarily favor a fully automated health-care system devoid of the doctor-patient bond. He's not a technocrat by training or by nature. He's a sociologist who studies people--their needs and desires. "People didn't really embrace hearing aids until they became small enough not to be embarrassing," he says. That's even more the case with something as sensitive as incontinence--a problem, like so many, that technology can help solve, but only once we're willing to accept the cure...
