...this speech Obama removed himself from the distractions at home and spent many nights in a room in the Park Hyatt Hotel in Chicago. These late-night sessions produced long, meandering texts that were then circulated to a close group of advisers, including Axelrod and Obama's speechwriter Jon Favreau-a 27-year-old wunderkind wordsmith. "When you're working with Senator Obama the main player on a speech is Senator Obama," Axelrod said. "He is the best speechwriter in the group and he knows what he wants to say and he generally says it better than anybody else would...
Fanboys and genre mavens have been well attended to in this summer movie season, which was launched with Jon Favreau's Iron Man on May 2 and is likely to reach a climax next week with the Batman sequel The Dark Knight. Today they're lining up for Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Many in this prime demographic - 14- to 24-year-old males - have already seen Guillermo del Toro's funny freak show at one of the Thursday midnight screenings that have become obligatory for action films...
...basically a three-person saga, led by Fraser, the easygoing, Toronto-educated star of the Mummy movies; his reassuring blandness is the very definition of the word Canadian. Hutcherson, who was Will Ferrell's son in Kicking and Screaming and the older brother in Favreau's Zathura, survives the early part of the film, where he's obliged to be restless and annoying, and emerges as an acceptable young hero. The film gets a big boost from Briem, a young Icelandic actress who is both angel-cool and sorceress-hot. (She's for the target kids' older brothers.) Her role...
Maybe it's just a coincidence, but the first two big movies of the summer season are about men fusing with their machines. And instead of being conquered or corrupted by their ambitions, the new machine men triumph. The implicit message of Jon Favreau's Iron Man, which earned more than $100 million in its opening weekend, and of Larry and Andy Wachowski's Speed Racer is that we've dwelled too long in the crypts of antiscientific dystopia. We live in an age of sophisticated machines. They do much of our work for us; we spend most...
Obviously there's more potential drama in a man-vs.-machine battle than in a movie about how to get along with your computer. Favreau and the Wachowskis know this. Their films show their heroes blending with robot suits and race cars in order to vanquish the bad guys. And in doing so, they've provided plenty of standard action-movie pleasures. Iron Man gives you a guy flying over L.A., disrupting military aviation and confronting a villain in even larger metal couture. Speed Racer boasts enough auto-erotic car-nage to make Grand Theft Auto IV seem, by comparison...
