Devised as a condition of the merger of the AFL and NFL, the big game quickly became the kind of national communion that only TV could make: a daylong ritual and feast, an event that you watched because you needed to watch that thing that everyone was watching. And in 1984, with the debut of the Apple Macintosh ad, the game became a showcase for commercials and seemed to realize its true purpose: to be a massive, expensive, profligate tribute to the desires of America's consumers and to the full bellies of its warehouses. ...Oscar season culminating in February. "Toronto is like the beginning of the school year," says Bingham Ray, president of distribution for Sidney Kimmel Entertainment, which is bringing the Ryan Gosling film Lars and the Real Girl to Toronto this year. For the Hollywood press, Toronto is a 10-day feast of films, celebrities and buzz, enough to fill their bellies for the fall. This New Testament passage is probably a reference back to Abraham in the Old Testament, who, approached by three strangers, threw them a feast, only to find that they were supernatural. Paul Lim, an Evangelical Christian and Assistant Professor at Vanderbilt Theological Seminary finds special meaning in the fact that the original Greek word for "hospitality" in this verse, "philoxenia," is actually stronger. It means "the love of strangers." Or, as he points out, the opposite of xenophobia...
