...demonstrated incontestable virtuosity in taking up the French presidency. Opinion polls ranked his popularity nearly as high as General de Gaulle's three months after De Gaulle's return to power, and ahead of all other French Presidents. Sarkozy even seemed to break with the past - quite a feat for someone from the same political family as outgoing President Jacques Chirac. Thanks to his policy of "opening" to rival forces, Sarkozy has attracted Socialist stars to his team, forging a cooperation that is uncommon in France...

...have beenmany perils Steve Fossett has handled fearlessly--plummeting 29,000 ft. (9 km) into the ocean in a hot-air balloon or realizing while flying solo that his fuel tanks were leaking. But with a "low threshold" for boredom, he pushed himself to a series of exploratory feats, most famously becoming the first person to fly around the world alone in a hot-air balloon, in 2002. ...detailed genetic analysis of Hwang's stem cells have clearly established that they come from a single egg, putting to rest nagging questions about what, if anything, Hwang and his team had actually accomplished. It may not have been Hwang's original goal, but successful parthenogenesis is no small feat. If he had reported it in 2004, says Daley, stem cell research might be much further along today - and enjoying a better reputation. "If we had known three years ago that it was possible to generate stem cells through parthenogenesis, then we almost certainly would already have patient-specific embryonic...
