Successful Wallop. This feat was accomplished by Cal's fantastic new 184-inch cyclotron, which packs the most powerful wallop ever achieved by man. Firing relatively heavy atomic bullets-deuterons (heavy hydrogen nuclei) and alpha particles (helium nuclei)-with a force of 200 million to 400 million electron volts, the cyclotron has almost ten times the power of the most potent cyclotron previously known (also at Cal).* At an American Physical Society meeting at Stanford last week, Physicists Glenn T. Seaborg and Isadore Perlman made the first report on what they and their California teammates, who work under...

Guiding Star. Last year some new evidence turned up. Dr. H. W. Babcock of Mt. Wilson Observatory, Calif, performed the unlikely feat of measuring (by spectrum analysis) the magnetic field of the star called 78 Virginis. When Professor Blackett heard about it, he grabbed pencil & paper. The star's size, mass and speed of revolution could be estimated fairly accurately. Nothing more was needed. The magnetic field of remote 78 Virginis just about proved what theorizing had already predicted: it was closely proportionate to the magnetic fields of the earth...

...pageant. In the last six months mild-voiced young Alec has provoked the Old Vic's stage into varied and resonant life. As the Fool in King Lear, Time & Tide found him near "perfection." The Daily Telegraph thought his cockalorum De Guiche in Cyrano de Bergerac "a remarkable feat...
